The mini tree ornaments were such a hit at today's Christmas market - the first of the season! ✨

I have absolutely loved creating handmade treasures for Christmas this year. The hand stitching, the little imperfections, the human touch, made with love. I *finally* stopped procrastinating and finished these stockings earlier this week 🥰🙌🏾 (anyone else procrastinate because the project is just so adorable it HAS to be just right?!?!) Sigh. But can you blame me? How adorable is this fabric? It took a while for us to settle on fabrics, and once we did, it took me a while to work out the measurements for making the letters, and create a stocking template that I think worked. But overall, I am super pleased with the results 😍

Less than two weeks to the Christmas markets and I'm busy adding cute-sy items to market stock! This week's sewing includes turning lovely fabric + batting bits on which I trial FMQ or free motion quilting designs into pouches! Hot tip: this is a fantastic way to practise FMQ techniques and skills without having to bear the weight of a quilt. And as a bonus, converting these into pouches adds a little extra character to your zipper pouches! 🙌🏾🫶🏾

This bit of FMQ was from when I got my machine back from being serviced earlier this year. But I better bury my quilting thread for this pouch before it heads to the markets 🫣🙈

Made the *tiniest* triangle in square (or tri-rec) blocks for a project today 🔼 1.75" unfinished (1.25" finished!) These are for a Christmas special order! It's one I have been experiencing some perfectionist procrastination for sure 😅 but hopefully this step means it will get finished this weekend (fingers crossed!)

It's the little things. I came across the pattern for these small triangle pouches about a year+ ago. But it was almost impossible to create something that felt just right. But this past week, I spent some more time creating, seam ripping and trying again. And this is the result!

October was a quiet month for us - lots of extra special family moments with our daughter turning one and a couple of other special days to remember for our family ❤️ for some of it I have been working behind the scenes getting ready for the end of year/Christmas season. Now that it's November, things are starting to pick up a little bit! I love Quilted Pouches! They're super cute, come together quickly, and they make such unique gifts for people!

Socials have been non-existent the past couple of weeks because I've been super distracted: Our little Leah is ONE!! Where has the year gone?!

The girls have had the best time playing with friends and opening presents. So lovely seeing Leah actually interact with others 🫶🏾 we're once again reminded of the blessing our beautiful community is.

I made Aasha's dress when she turned one, so of course I had to make Leah's (and Aasha's) as well! More on the dress in another post.

And now we have two toddlers!

The journey of two people attempting to do a quilt photo shoot with a tripod on a windy day. Results - 🙃 rising tensions, and a semi unsuccessful photoshoot 😅

Let me count the ways this photoshoot failed - I got the tripod set up and then knocked it over. Then the focus wasn't quite right. One time I didn't make it onto my stool in time (keep in mind, I am *shorter* than my husband so we have to adjust for that anyway. Then the A/C made it in. Then the wind was VERY unhelpful by blowing beautifully while we set up and in the most annoying way when we took the actual photo 😂

Ah well. But good thing none of that takes away from this stunner of a quilt! Rainbow against that black background is practically magical. Quilted with matchstick quilting (with rainbow threads!), a hot pink backing, beige crackle print fabric for binding (like gold!), and secured with hot pink big stitching on the back, this quilt has oodles of good stuff going for it. Plus my husband and I walked away from this photoshoot still friends 🙃

Another Christmas post 🙌🏾🌲 If you'd seen my stories a couple of days ago you would have seen these beauties in progress. Well, here it is all finished! How adorable are these?!?! It's a much smaller version of the larger Fabric Christmas Tree I posted earlier. It comes with a little bit of ribbon so it's ready to hang on your tree. And yes, they have been added to the Christmas orders list!

You can have one of these (or 10 of these!) to decorate your home or Christmas Tree 🎄And the best part is that you can use and re-use them every year. They also make excellent gifts. They're about 11.5 cm tall (5inches) and perfect to add to a stocking.

Happy Sunday! My feed's all over the place these days as I'm going back and forth between projects (fun!). But how could I NOT share this gorgeous project!! The algorithm will simply have to cope. I discovered fabric trees last year around Christmas, and this pattern by @patternsforpirates is super easy (and free!) Finishing up a custom quilt this week with some big stitch binding in a contrast colour. 🙌🏾🫶🏾 I have thoroughly enjoyed making this quilt so much (even though it has taken me a lot longer than I had planned!)

I don't typically make heaps of quilts for sale because I love creating with a person in mind. And that's on purpose - from fabric selection to quilting style to binding, it's all unique and depends on the person. I love being intentional about the little things - especially so, if the person who has requested it has something specific in mind. I want to create something that is loved and cherished for years to come.

And how gorgeous are these fabrics!! 🤩 🌈 They’re bursting with rainbow colours with little touches of gold that shimmer in the light. With hot pink for a little extra pop ✨ To add to the fun, I will sometimes add something a little *extra* to make each piece truly unique. (A surprise for the recipient!).

On a side note, this is the first time I am working only with solids! Typically I use blenders or same colour prints if the pattern calls for it, although I do love my vibrant prints! Can't wait to get started on this 🩷

Monday morning here and I have had a very Velcro baby all morning 🙃 days like this are so hard. Easy to feel touched out. And then Google reminds me of what I was doing last year around this time. Final press before basting and ready to be quilted! It was the last month before the baby got here and we were busy preparing for the baby 🩷 it might sound funny but prepping and basting a few quilts was a part of my postpartum prep list, along with all the other typical nesting stuff.

Quilting has always been my happy place. My stress relief. My way to cope when things seem out of control and my anxiety starts to rise. Postpartum hormone wildness caught me off guard last time and this time was no different. Quilting was one of the ways I made it through. An hour here, an hour there. It took a lot of effort from my support system to allow me the time and space to do this. But it was so worth it.

This quilt (and the others I prepped!) are all quilted and bound now. We are almost at the end of what's considered postpartum, with our little one turning ONE next month! It's bittersweet, and I'm feeling all the feels 🦋

EKKA week! Today (Sunday) is the last day of the Ekka, the Royal Queensland Show. We went earlier in the week last week for a fun family outing. This is the second year I sent in three quilts for the Quilts across Queensland part of the show. I haven't won any awards yet (I mean have you seen some of the other quilts???) but what an honour to have my quilts be displayed and admired like this by soooo many people! What an honour 🫶🏾🙌🏾

I always find chain piecing super calming and therapeutic - my version of mindfulness 🫶🏾 almost has a mesmerising quality about it as a time-lapse 🙃 Today was a public holiday here in Brisbane, because Queensland's biggest show the Ekka is currently on right now. We went yesterday so we had some downtime today, and my husband very graciously looked after the girls all day so I got lots of solid chunks of time to spend at the machine. Yay!

If you haven't heard of chain piecing before, chain piecing is when you sew multiple things as a batch, in one go without breaking the thread. Usually works great if you have to sew a lot of the same thing (like lots of HSTs, or four patch etc.) Just make sure you have all your fabric cuts labelled and ready to go! It has been my go-to for whenever I am feeling a bit anxious. I put on some TV or music and keep at it. I always try to push through as much as possible before I need to break to do some pressing and trimming.

I've been working away at this rainbow 🌈 quilt for a little while now and it's coming together quite nicely. I can already tell it's going to have such a powerful visual impact 🤩

QUILTING TIP: Record a time-lapse video of yourself doing your least favourite quilting task (for me right now it's trimming 😬). I found it a great way to stay motivated and finish the task I started. Please ignore the lighting and reflection issues in the video, I don't have the best set up for taking videos 🙈 I got this too from a friend who records herself studying. Seems to work for her as well!

It works even better if you can binge watch a TV show or listen to a podcast while working. I'm currently working my way through Law and Order: SVU so glad it's 24 seasons long! Should last me a little while 😅

This is at 30x speed - so about 20 mins of trimming. Which is crazy as it would have a 100% taken me at least twice that long if I wasn't recording! So glad I got this done though, because 20 mins is pretty much all I can manage these days with two kiddos underfoot. Well done to my husband, who managed to look after them while also cooking dinner so I could do this 🙌🏾

Do you record yourself working?

*no quilt blocks were cut incorrectly in the making of this video* 😅

Anyone ever been here where you're in the groove making some two-at-a-time blocks and picked up your rotary cutter instead of the pencil when it was time to *mark* your line (not cut it)? I have yet to do this, but I fear it must be inevitable at some point 😅

Given the block I am working on, if I HAD made this mistake, at least it wasn't one that would totally ruin this block! It would just mean some bias sewing, which is annoying but not impossible. Phew!

End of July has me a little extra emotional this year - on Thursday we celebrated my birthday 🎂 and it was such a beautiful day! Today we celebrate my grandmother's life. It's been 10 years today since she passed away. She was such an incredible woman - oldest of 10 siblings, she was quite the peacemaker, but also super mischievous! She was a teacher and influenced the lives of so many young people. And in our family, she was a storyteller and creative genius. Always working on something cool! "Cece's Quilts and Things" is a nod to her middle name, which is also one of my names. While quilting is something new for us, creativity is in our DNA and I love that this is a thread that connects me to her. ❣️Swipe for a photo of me with my grandmother.

For me, this time of year is a reminder that grief and joy can co-exist. Though I am sad that she isn't here to see all that's happened in my life, especially the birth of my girls, I am so thankful to have known her and the years we had together. And how wonderful that we can remember her and celebrate her life each year around the same time as my birthday!

Both celebrations have been quiet this year, with lots of quality time with family as the focus. But I have been working on something new to share as well. So, if you're an email subscriber, be on the lookout for an email from me with a special celebratory something.

Any guesses as to what quilt I might be making with this one? Hint: it isn't one of my designs, but the designer might be a little bit math-y, and the pattern might have something to do with something that's in my caption!

The points are on point with this block, if I do say so myself 😅 I'm back at the sewing machine trying to bring to life another block sketch from my sketch book. I am super excited about this quilt, and especially how this block has turned out! It reminds me of a little bit of sunshine 🔆 This quilt has so many elements from my love of Geometry and mathematics. And it's coming together so beautifully!

So keen to keep working on this quilt, but, alas! The housework and parenting responsibilities keep calling 🙃

The latest Quilt Stories India @quiltstoriesmagazine issue went out earlier today and it has all the details on how I quilted this lovely Sugar and Spice baby quilt. It's got some easy machine quilting and lots of lovely hand quilting details, which is so perfect for a baby quilt 🫶🏾🙌🏾 This quilt is the softest and has the best drape! Learn more about how I used Indian cottons and Indian cotton batiks with textured woven backing to make this super soft. Plus it's super lightweight and breathable, making it an ideal summer quilt.

Happy Sunday! And a lovely day to share photos of my *finished* Mosaic Ornaments quilt! I was so excited to get this quilt finished and photographed that I forgot to actually share photos of it 😬 Completely quilted by free motion quilting on my home machine (which has a larger throat space than a typical home machine, and that helps!). It looks positively royal in person because of all the gold bits in it. I can't wait to give it to my sister in law but she might need to wait a bit longer because I have actually entered the quilt into a quilt show/competition. Now to add a hanging sleeve to the back!

Remember this gorgeous @quilt_ink mock up created by @hobbyandhomestead back in February when the Mosaic Ornaments quilt pattern was released? Well it's being turned into an actual quilt!!!

I have been following along to see the progress being made and it's amazing! I love that mock ups with real fabrics and fabric requirements can be created on QuiltInk. At the moment only two of my patterns are available on QuiltInk, but I'm looking at adding more in the future. Colouring mock ups is so fun and can be quite relaxing, even if you don't intend to turn it into a quilt (but who knows, maybe the mock up will inspire you to make the quilt! 😅) The two patterns currently available are the Colourful Mosaic and Mosaic Ornaments quilt patterns - and until the end of June you can get both patterns for the price of one on my website with the code EOFY2025SALE

Let's talk feet - sewing machine feet! I have had my sewing machine for a few years now so obviously I have some favourite sewing machine feet 😅 But I guess it's similar to how my husband has his favourite tools. So I'm just going to own it 🙃

First up is my free motion quilting (FMQ) foot - I like the open one so I can see better. FMQ is a new obsession, but this foot still gets plenty of use lately!

Next is my dual feed foot. This one is probably still one of my most used ones, especially when it comes to quilting or sewing through multiple layers. The dual feed means it moves the top of the fabric in sync with the feed dogs. It's a total game changer! It's also quite wide and I love using it to "echo" the pattern lines in my quilt blocks.

Next is my all purpose foot! I do pretty much all my sewing with it! Although I do also have a 1/4" foot, because my machine can move the needle over I tend to still use this one for all my piecing. In my previous sewing machine, I did all my sewing with my 1/4" foot! Funny how preferences change!

And last but not least is my HP foot. It is also a dual feed foot but it's a 1/4" one and I don't know how, but it is amazing with lots of layers. So I pretty much only use this one if I'm making quilted zipper pouches or other items.

And there you have it! Because I use all these quite frequently, they do need lots of extra care. This year when I sent my machine for servicing they were kind enough to also clean and oil the sewing feet (especially the FMQ one!). And it runs so much better after that!

It's almost the end of Thursday here and feels like it's the weekend already 🙌🏾🤩 But still have Friday to get through 🙃 Oh well!

It was a great day to look back at all my patterns and see some bestsellers. Every time I design a pattern I always think it's the best pattern I have designed and I'm convinced everyone will love it 🙃 of course reality is often quite different, but that's okay. I love seeing how others view my patterns and what ends up being popular. Because in the end, I'm happy to be creating things that others can take and use in their own creative journeys.

Slowing down. This was one of those weeks for me where I needed to slow down. Motherhood, running a business, bad news in the world, life in general all gets a bit too much sometimes and anxiety starts to come back up to the surface again. This has been that season for me. I've had to remind myself repeatedly that I am still healing, still postpartum, and definitely still learning. Lots of Grace and lots of time.

Quilting has always been that thing that resets everything for me. And I have been so blessed to have had time to spend on my sewing in this season, even with all of my other responsibilities. I even got to do some hand quilting. Back in 2020 when I first started quilting in earnest, I did pretty much all my sewing by hand (I didn't even know how to use a sewing machine at the time!). Back then was another difficult season for me. I was in a long distance relationship with my boyfriend (now husband) and with all the global shut downs, I had no idea when we would see each other next! My anxiety was at an all time high. Sewing and quilting by hand gave me something to focus on, and it helped me process everything.

I love the speed of hand quilting. I love that it is so unhurried. (I also love that it's easier to unpick 😅). It is definitely a bonus or luxury to have time or space to do any hand quilting these days (especially with a curious toddler and newly mobile 8 month old trying to get into things they shouldn't get into!) so I cherish these bonus moments.

While I am processing all that's going on, you might hear less frequently from me. But I am still here, and still creating. And I will share updates on all the platforms as I am able. Is #flashbackriday still a thing? Well, I'll take any excuse to share progress update photos of this gorgeous quilt in the making from back in 2020.

A little backstory if you're seeing this quilt for the first time on my feed - this is a King size quilt I decided to make on a whim from a pattern that I saw in a magazine and upsized. It is almost entirely hand stitched, except for the borders, which I did on an old fashioned treadle machine. So everything in the photo was hand stitched! Back then I didn't know much about quilting, no tricks, no short cuts. I actually cut all the little triangles I used for the HSTs in the square in square blocks (the HSTs are 2.5" so you can imagine how long that took me!). I also didn't have any quilting rulers, didn't have a rotary cutter or cutting mats. Just my mini ironing board, and some fabric scissors. I marked all my lines by pencil and cut things out with scissors. To say it took me a while to get this done would be an understatement!

The pattern is "storm at sea" but because the name sounds so similar to the more popular "stormy sea" pattern, I haven't been able to find it since. I might still have the pages from the quilting magazine, but I don't have more information about it, except that I remember it being a Jelly Roll friendly quilt (a phrase that meant nothing to me back then because I didn't know anything about quilting precuts!)

It is finished up now but still sitting as a quilt top because tbh, I don't love the blue solid. I couldn't find fabric I loved (because, well it was 2020 😅) and had to settle for this blue polyblend cotton. It doesn't feel the best and it warped a lot when I pressed the quilt top. This year I decided I would re-do the block that uses the blue and replace the blue with something nicer. I'm keen to get started but also a bit sad that I'll be losing all that lovely hand sewing! But I'm sure it's the only thing that will actually get me to finish up this quilt.

Having made quite a few quilts since then, I still can't believe how I made this quilt top with all my limitations! It wasn't my first ever quilt, but it's definitely a super special quilt for me ❣️

It's "try something new" weekend in my sewing room! And I made some bunting - which has been on my want-to-try list for a long time. I hadn't intended to make it all purple, but it just worked out that way when I went to pull fabric. These purples (and a few more fabrics) were given to me by a friend who mostly makes clothes. These were all too small for her to make anything with - but not small enough for projects like this one. I used a triangle ruler I got ages ago as part of a quilting ruler set. It's not the best size for bunting - ideally, I'd want to make it larger - but it actually turned out not too bad! Four fabrics, 6 triangles in each, 24 pieces overall, 5m of white bias binding tape (which I got at a thrift store/op shop for $2, score!), 2 marvel movies, one weekend, and I present to you 5m of purple bunting!

I am not super pleased with the points of my triangles, but that's okay - lots of time to perfect this skill. I will be making this again for sure ❣️

I'm making scrappy binding for a quilt, using leftover 2.5" strips from the quilt top, so of course I had to also make bonus HSTs from the triangle bits that get trimmed. I usually just keep the triangle bits in a box to be used later (because why would anyone throw away even the tiniest bits of fabric, right 😅?!). But because this was a scrappy binding, and each strip was different, I made bonus HSTs instead. You make these by adding a second sewing line a 1/2" away from your original diagonal seam joining the binding strips together. Then cut to separate! Btw, you can use this method almost anywhere you need to use the stitch and flip method to make bonus blocks.

The HSTs are just under 2", soooo tiny 🤩 what shall I make with them???

Google's just reminded me that it's been three years since I finished these three quilts. These are the sweetest baby quilts ever and the patterns are great for showcasing the cutest fabrics. Or you could experiment with different fabric weights, like I've done with the zig zag quilt by using Indian cottons. The patterns themselves are quite straightforward, involving minimal trimming (if any!) and come together VERY quickly! (I think I finished one of the quilts in a day of dedicated sewing - quilted and bound and all).

A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to make matching dresses for girls. (Great timing btw, considering it's getting colder in Brisbane and the only patterns I have and can manage for outfits for the girls are summery ones 😅). It's been a learning curve for sure! To start with I didn't have enough of the block print fabric, so I needed to add in another fabric - so happy I had this yellow solid, bought for another project but used instead to decorate a bulletin board 🙃 (waste not, want not, right?). But I didn't want to do like a skirt in one fabric, bodice in one fabric thing, so I talked it over with some sewing friends (a.k.a, sewing geniuses @kelseysih and @ally_artie_handmade and Shelley, who isn't on Instagram) and the suggestion was to add this ruffle to the bodice and some yellow binding to the bottom. Pretty pleased with how it's turned out! It did involve some seam ripping at one point 🥴 Phil added the snaps, because, well, button holes scare me But I did manage to get it all finished in time for Mother's Day! Phew.

Now to get the girls to wear this as much as possible before they grow out of it!
