Concept to Creation: The Starstruck Quilt

Writer's picture: prarthanadicksonprarthanadickson

Since I began my quilting journey, I have been quite obsessed with Star Blocks. They are so versatile and there are so many versions of star blocks - both traditional and modern. So, when I sat down to plan a mystery block of the month (BOM) for 2023 it was a no-brainer! The "Starstruck" Quilt is my take on traditional (and modern) star blocks with two layout options - a modern layout with chevron blocks interspersed and a traditional layout with sashing. I opted to try a traditional "sampler style" layout in the end, but I hope to make this quilt again and try the scrappy, abstract (chevron) layout.

2023 also happened to be the best year for me to plan a sew-a-long! I was a new mother to a little girl born in February 2023, and the monthly nature of this sew-a-long gave me some much needed "me-time" while getting used to life with a little one. The patterns for the blocks in this quilt were released monthly, throughout 2023. While I initially planned to work on 18 blocks, it ended up being 20 blocks by the time we finished.

Layout Styles:

This quilt can also be made as a "quilt-as-you-go" quilt, and perfect for practicing quilting techniques like free motion quilting, echo quilting, ruler quilting, etc. My version of this quilt was quilted using echo quilting techniques on my domestic sewing machine, using a dual feed foot (or walking foot).

This BOM sew-a-long was free in 2023, for those who missed out, you can purchase the blocks from my patterns shop or my Etsy shop. You can download fabric requirements and layout information using the links below:
